Larry and I had the opportunity to drive to Central, Arizona a couple of weeks ago and watch the groundbreaking for the Gila Valley Temple. Normally we wouldn't have gone but we have a dear friend, Dent Coombs, who was born in Central 92 years ago. We thought it would be great to take him to the groundbreaking. He was SO excited. We had to leave home about 4:00 in the morning to pick him up in Ahwatukee. During the 3+ hour drive to Central he shared story after story of the people he had influenced during his many years of church service. He is such a great example, even now.
He told us about his current missionary experiences. Every day he gets in his little scooter and rides to the local park. With Book of Mormon in hand he visits with anyone and everyone he can. He shares scriptures, stories and personal testimony of the gospel. I don't know if he will ever know the impact he is having but that doesn't matter to him. He is just trying to do all that he can to further the Lord's work. What a humble, sweet man. He is still serving as Sunday School Class President, a calling Larry issued to him over 8 years ago. Each week he prepares a short message to present to the class prior to the teacher's lesson.
Our trip to Central was amazing. Brother Coombs showed us where he was born, the house he lived in, etc. We were able to drive past the local cemetery where his parents, grandparents and great-grandparents are buried.
At the groundbreaking ceremony he was able to shake hands with Elder Neil L. Andersen of the Seventy and he even turned a shovel full of dirt. It brought tears to my eyes to see the joy this brought to him.
I feel so blessed to be married to Larry. He easily could have said we didn't have time to spend a day like this, away from our work and home responsibilities. But Larry loves people and loves the Lord. He is willing to sarifice to serve others. I love him for that. Someday I hope to be more like him.
